A seat that can only read code has to guess how the result looks. These tools let it open the app it built and look. All of them are on the Mac app.
The browser pane
Where to find it. Browser in the title bar's workbench toolbar, or /browser. Tabs show as chips along the top.
The seats can open pages, read them, click, type, take screenshots, read the console and network requests, and set the viewport. You can use the same pane yourself. In Auto mode, opening a page runs without asking; clicking, typing or running a script asks, because the pane carries your sign-ins and a page can carry text aimed at the seat. Change either in Settings → Account → Sign-in & Security → What Auto still asks about.
Pointing at the page
How to use it.
- Open the page in the browser pane and click the ⌖ button in its bar.
- Hover: the element under the pointer is outlined. Click it.
- A description of that element is written into the message box. Add what is wrong with it and send.
A pick never sends by itself, and picks stop counting once you switch pointing off or load another page.
iOS Simulator and Android emulator
Where to find it. ⋯ → Simulator, or /simulator. Pick a device and press Boot.
The room can install a build from the workspace, launch it, tap, type, swipe, read the screen as text and take screenshots. Android needs Android Studio's SDK installed; the app finds adb in its usual place. In Auto mode, installing and launching run quietly; tapping and typing ask.
Using other Mac apps
With Accessibility and Automation allowed for LetThemBuild in macOS System Settings, a seat can read an app's front window as text, click a labelled control, and type into it. Reading one window runs quietly in Auto; clicking, typing, quitting an app and a picture of the whole screen ask. Use it to have the room read an Xcode build log. Do not use it with a password manager or mail open in the front window.
Preview on your phone
Where to find it. Background tasks, at the top. It needs Settings → Account → Sign-in & Security → Preview on my phone (off by default).
How to use it.
- Start your app's dev server, for example npm run dev with an ampersand so it runs in the background.
- In Background tasks, pick its port and press Show on my phone.
- Scan the code with your phone's camera on the same Wi-Fi.
It lasts 15 minutes by default, or ten minutes with nothing opened. Anyone on your network with the code can open it until then. A team can turn it off.
