Notes, follow-ups and chapters from the lead

How the lead keeps a note in memory while it works, leaves you a follow-up to start later, and marks the chapters of a long run.

Three things the lead can do on its own during a run, on the Mac and in the web room. Reviewers cannot.

Notes in memory

The lead can read what is kept in memory and add to it, instead of waiting for the end of the discussion. It chooses one of two places:

  • Project memory: how this codebase is built, a decision and its reason, what a word means here. On the Mac it is the checkout's .letthemchat/memory.json; on the web, the memory of the project the discussion is filed in.
  • Personal memory: how you like to work. It goes with your account.

The rules are the ones memory already has. A credential, a key, a token or anyone's contact details is refused. The lead can change or forget only notes the room wrote, never ones you typed. A run makes at most 10 changes. With memory switched off the lead is told so and reads nothing. A private or temporary discussion, Plan mode and a read-only run keep nothing.

Each change is a row in the reply's activity, such as "Saved a note to project memory: …". A project note also appears in that run's Summary under Project memory, with Undo. You can remove any note in Settings → The room → Memory, as before.

Asking. On the Mac a change is asked about like an edit: it goes through in Auto, Accept edits and Smart, and Manual asks first. If your team reviews memories, a new note stays out of every prompt until someone has seen it. On the web the lead cannot save past that review, and only someone who can edit a project changes its memory.

Follow-ups

When the lead notices work that belongs in its own discussion, it can leave a Suggested Follow-Up card under its reply: a title, why it matters, and the message to start with. Start Discussion opens a new discussion with that message in the box, for you to send or change. Dismiss puts the card away. A card never starts anything on its own. A run leaves at most three.

Chapters

In a long run the lead can mark where a new phase starts, for example "Running the tests". The transcript shows a quiet divider with the title, and a Chapters menu above the transcript lists each one to jump to. A run marks at most 12. The Mac, the web and the iPhone show them the same way.
