Where new sessions land

New Session always lands in General, your built-in project, in every mode and on every app. How to move a session, the folder the Mac gives it, and the one setting that changes it.

Every account has a built-in project named General. When you press New Session (or New Discussion), the session lands in General straight away. Nothing asks where it should go, and it never follows the project you used last, the discussion you had open or the folder selected in the sidebar. This is the same on the Mac, the web and the iPhone, and for every mode: In Turns, Side-by-Side and Channel.

General

  • General is the first project in the sidebar on every app.
  • It is private to you. It can't be shared with a team.
  • It can't be renamed, deleted, archived or moved inside another folder. You can pin it, collapse it, and give it subfolders, instructions and files like any project.
  • Every account has one from the start. An account made before General existed gets it the first time it opens the app.

Starting somewhere else

A new session lands in another project only when you start it from that project:

  • the + beside the project in the sidebar, or New Discussion in its menu;
  • the compose box on the project's page;
  • the board's New Discussion while the board is filtered to a project.

To move a session afterwards, use Move To… on its menu. If the project you move it to has its own folder on the Mac, the session follows that project's folder as before; otherwise it keeps the folder it has.

A folder of its own on the Mac

On the Mac, each session in General gets its own working folder under your workspaces folder (~/Documents/LetThemBuild unless you chose another in Settings). The folder is named from your first message: "Build a budget tracker app" becomes budget-tracker. If that name is taken, the next one is budget-tracker-2, then budget-tracker-3. The folder is made when the session first runs.

To rename it later, choose Rename Folder… on the session's menu. The folder is renamed on disk and every session working there follows it.

If you point a session in General at a folder another project lists, the composer offers File in <project>?. Not Now hides the offer for that session; Settings › General › Suggest a Project From the Workspace turns it off on this Mac.

The web and the iPhone have no folder: a session started there simply belongs to General. When you run it on your Mac (Run on My Mac), the Mac gives it a folder the same way.

The setting

Settings › New Sessions Land In (New Sessions on the web; the New Sessions group on the Mac; Appearance on the iPhone):

  • General (default). New sessions land in General.
  • One project. Pick any of your projects and new sessions land there instead. If that project is archived or deleted, they land in General again.

The setting belongs to your account and is shared by the Mac, the web and the iPhone. Earlier versions offered No Project and Last Used Project; both now mean General.

Teams that require a project

A team can require every discussion to belong to a team project (Tickets only, see Team: members, roles and limits). General is private, so under that rule New asks which team project to start in, and says why. If New Sessions Land In names a team project, the session starts there without asking.

Sessions started from a repository

A pull request's Fix CI, a branch review, a list run, or a session started from an issue lands in the project of the repository it came from: the project that owns or lists that folder on the Mac. Only when no project claims the repository does it land in General.
