Private discussions on the Mac

Keep a discussion on your Mac, or follow it from your paired iPhone end-to-end encrypted, with nothing stored on our servers; and see the app you are building on your phone.

On the Mac, a discussion can be private instead: choose it for new discussions under Settings → Account → New discussions, or for one discussion from its ⋯ → Privacy menu.

  • Keep on this Mac: nothing of the discussion goes to our servers — not its words, its title, its files or its folder — and no other device sees it.
  • Private live view: nothing of it is stored on our servers either, but an iPhone you paired with the Mac (Settings → Account → Phones for private discussions) can list it, follow it while it runs and write to it. What passes between them is sealed with keys made on each device, so our relay carries it without being able to read it, and deletes it once delivered.

A private discussion does not use Our Keys or the Free Key, which reach the providers through our servers; it runs on your own keys, CLIs or local models. Nothing is learned from it into memory. Making a synced discussion private removes its copy from your account. A team can require discussions to be at least this private.

Seeing your app on your phone

Background tasks → Preview on your phone shows the app a discussion is building on your phone over your own Wi-Fi: scan the code and it opens, with a one-time code, for the minutes you chose. Nothing goes through our servers. Away from your Wi-Fi, give your own tunnel's address (Tailscale, Cloudflare Tunnel) in Settings and scan its code instead. It is off until you turn it on.
